Case 1: Impetigo(Eli)
Case 2: Strep throat(Adam)
Case 3: Scarlet fever(Adam)
Case 4: Ear infection(Eli)
Case 5: Strep throat(Eli)
Question 1: Who REALLY gets scarlet fever anymore?
Question 2: What child under the age of 2 gets strep throat?
Answer to question 1&2: Nobody gets scarlet fever anymore and you especially don't get it if you have ever had it before(adam). Children under the age of 2 DO NOT get strep throat because they have natural antibodies that were developed in the womb, strengthened by breastfeeding and carry the child until they are at least 2.
Revelations: Apparently none of this applies to my family.
The Trail: Eli got impetigo after he had been battling a fever virus that lasted on and off for about three weeks. The result was a lot of snot and yucky congestion. Apparently when you have the above mentioned, the result of wiping your nose excessively can result in an irritation under the nose which can then easily pick up some of the lovely group A streptococcus or staphylococcus aureus. We treated the impetigo but apparently the damage had already been done. Adam comes down with strep throat AND scarlet fever(both different strains of the strep) Most normal people only get one version and that is strep throat. Eli then develops a fever which was an ear infection as a result of the nastiness he had been fighting for the above mentioned three weeks. Just when I think all had calmed down up pops the 24 hour strep test done on Eli. Positive. We are back where we started. High fevers. No sleep. Grumpy husband and child. Illnesses that just linger. The luck of a deer struck by a fast moving truck. It has been a LONG week.
The hope: That we are on the mend.
